How to Get a New Passport

Applying for your first passport or renewing an expired one. Covers documents, fees, and how to avoid common delays.

Passport2–4 hours at office💰 PKR 4,500–12,000
  • Original CNIC (or B-Form / Birth Certificate for minors)
  • CNIC photocopy (front and back)
  • Old passport if renewing (original + photocopy of first page)
  • Completed passport application form (available at office or dgip.gov.pk)
  • Bank challan showing fee payment (pay at designated banks beforehand)
  • 2 recent passport-size photographs (white background)
1
Pay the fee at a bank first
Unlike most offices, passport offices require you to pay at a bank before you submit. Go to any branch of HBL, UBL, ABL, or MCB and deposit the fee using the passport challan form. Keep the original stamped challan — the office won't accept you without it.
2
Fill out the application form
Get the form from the passport office counter or download it from dgip.gov.pk. Fill it in block letters. Double-check your name spelling — it must match your CNIC exactly, or your passport will be rejected.
3
Book a token online (recommended)
Most passport offices now use the online token system at dgip.gov.pk. Book your slot in advance to avoid waiting 2–3 hours in the walk-in queue.
4
Visit the passport office
Bring all your documents: CNIC original + copy, application form, bank challan, photos, and old passport (if renewing). Arrive on time for your token slot.
5
Submit documents at the counter
Staff will verify your documents, check your form, and scan your CNIC. They'll staple your photos and challan to the form. You'll get a receipt with an application number.
6
Biometrics
Your fingerprints will be scanned and a new photo taken at the office. This takes about 5 minutes.
7
Track and collect
Track status at dgip.gov.pk using your application number. Once ready (Normal: 30 days, Urgent: 7 days, Executive: 2 days), collect in person from the same office or arrange home delivery.
  • Your name on the form must match your CNIC exactly — even one letter difference causes rejection
  • Pay the bank challan the day before so you're not rushing on the day
  • The Executive (2-day) option is worth it if you have an upcoming flight
  • Dress formally — your passport photo is taken at the office, not brought from outside
  • Minors under 18 need a parent or guardian present
Can I apply online without visiting?
No. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) must be done in person. You can book a slot online and fill the form online, but the visit is mandatory.
My passport is damaged. What do I do?
Bring the damaged passport along with all standard documents. You'll apply for a renewal — the process is the same, but you may be asked about the damage.
Can I renew at a different city's office?
Yes. You can visit any passport office in Pakistan regardless of which city is on your CNIC.
What if my CNIC and old passport have different name spellings?
You'll need to resolve the CNIC name first (via NADRA), then apply for the passport. The passport office will reject mismatched names.
